Danish for 'wooden light'
The candle is based on a wooden component that I turned on a wood lathe. There is a phrase in Danish called ‘Hygge’ which roughly translates to cosy, and one aspect of creating a hygge environment is lighting candles for a relaxing ambience. My aspiration for this candle is that it provides a sense of hygge to peoples lives.
I made this series of candles for a 'Batch Production Unit' in the final year of my degree at Rycotewood. I chose to focus on light and wanted to use a material that wasn't typical in my course to push myself to learn new skills and have a better understanding for a range of materials.
Applying woodworking processes and mindset to designing a candle. On the lathe I turned several wooden formers to provide the form for the candle. No technical drawings were produced before turning the formers, I wanted the shape to evolve through the making process.
Using this former I produced a two part plaster mould to make the reusable candle mould.
